Charlton have been long-term admirers of Jonson Clarke-Harris – now they need to stop Posh dangerman tomorrow
Lee Bowyer is fully aware of the attacking threats that Peterborough United possess – with the Charlton manager a big admirer of Jonson Clarke-Harris.
The Addicks were keen on the 26-year-old frontman before he joined the Posh in August but were under a transfer embargo.
And Bowyer and director of football Steve Gallen had both been given encouragement to pursue Clarke-Harris in the 2020 January transfer window – despite East Street Investments, then running the club, knowing they had been blocked from doing incoming deals by the EFL.
Clarke-Harris has 13 goals in 20 appearances for Peterborough and opened the scoring in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Milton Keynes at the ABAX Stadium.
Sammie Szmodics, picked up for an undisclosed fee from Bristol City in September, also netted twice – his first goals since the start of October.
Siriki Dembele has been linked with a move to Celtic and Rangers.
“They are a good side,” said Charlton manager Bowyer. “I’ve watched them on numerous occasions.
“Their front players are very good. Clarke-Harris scores a lot of goals and different types of goals in and around the six-yard box. We’ve definitely got to make sure he hasn’t got any opportunities in and around the six, because when he does he scores. Stopping the ammunition to him will be important.”
But Charlton are back into the League One promotion spots after their 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers.
And only wayward finishing prevented the Addicks running out more emphatic victors.
“I’ve watched it back and if we had come away scoring three or four goals then you’d have said that would be fair,” said Bowyer. “We could have scored as many as we did in the game before against Rochdale.
“It is a good thing we’re creating chances and we moved the ball well. They [Rovers] were quite direct and we competed well. The game plan, everything we went through on Friday, worked.”
