“Crazy” – James Tomkins expresses shock at clean sheet wait for Crystal Palace

James Tomkins was surprised to hear that he had contributed to Crystal Palace’s first clean sheet since the opening day of the season when the Eagles defeated Sheffield United on Saturday.

Tomkins has started Palace’s last two matches after spending nearly 11 months absent with a hamstring injury.

The winless Blades’ failure to score on Saturday- making it the first time Palace had shut out an opposition since a 1-0 win over Southampton in September. It was just the third time it had happened in 25 matches.

Tomkins said: “Someone said it was the first game of the season when we last kept a clean sheet, which seems crazy.

“We are a team who do like to keep it tight and don’t like to concede many goals. We’ve conceded a few of late and it was about keeping the ball out against Sheffield United.

“They hadn’t scored many goals but are still a threat. The clean sheet was massive for us.”

Palace travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday for their third round FA Cup tie. It is a 7.45pm kick-off at Molineux.

The next Premier League game for Roy Hodgson’s side is at Arsenal on January 14.
