New Covid-19 testing centre opens in Damilola Taylor Centre, in Peckham

A new Covid-19 rapid testing centre has opened at the Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham.

Testing is open to people over 16 who do not have Covid-19 symptoms, particularly key workers who can’t work from home.

Around one in three people with Covid-19 are thought to be asymptomatic but can still pass it on.

The centre, which will offer the rapid lateral flow tests, is open seven days a week from 9am to 7pm.

Results will likely be sent out in less than an hour.

The tests are free but an appointment must be booked in advance.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “We’re now offering free rapid lateral flow tests to residents who don’t have symptoms of Covid-19, particularly those who are key workers and who can’t work from home.

“We know that one in three people with COVID-19 have no symptoms so are carrying the virus and could spread it to work colleagues or those they live with without even realising.

“By booking a rapid Covid-19 test, which is painless and provides a result in less than an hour, more positive cases can be identified which will help control the virus and ultimately protect more lives.”

The tests are not available to people with Covid-19 symptoms, who must book a free NHS test on the Government’s website.

More sites are expected to open soon in the borough.
