South London residents put on exhibitions about their lives and experiences

Residents of a South London estate have put on an exhibition exploring their lives and experiences.

Two projects, As Here Becomes There and Home Is Where The Heart Is, were shown together at ASC Gallery in Thurlow Street for the past three weeks.

The works on show represent two different community engagement projects involving residents of the Aylesbury Estate in during 2020-2021.

As Here Becomes There was an exploration of the estate initiated by young residents who guided participating artists to places of significance to them.

The places were then investigated collaboratively through a series of drawing, printmaking and photography workshops in early 2020.

Home Is Where The Heart Is marks the publication of an intergenerational postal exchange between older and younger residents, that took place during eight weeks of lockdown at the beginning of this year.

The project explored the challenges of relocation by focusing on the strength of the community and its shared experiences.

Participating artists include Hannah Cushion, Harriet Mena Hill, Mandy Payne, Alison Romanczuk and Taigh Romanczuk.

The exhibition closes today.
