10,000 tulips to spring to life next year in Bermondsey

Green-fingered residents are springing into action to plant a tulip trail tribute.

The Greener Bermondsey group has been working with schools, care homes and other community groups across the borough to plant 10,000 tulip bulbs.

The tulips will flower next spring. The group hopes to create a walking map as a trail for people to follow.

The Mayor of Southwark, Barrie Hargrove, also joined in the planting on November 1.

The project is part of Greener Bermondsey’s Ada 100, campaign which celebrates 100 years of the Beautification Committee, founded by Ada Salter, London’s first woman Mayor.

During her time as Mayor, Ada planted 10,000 tulips across Bermondsey. She believed that improving people’s surroundings improved their lives.

Councillor Humaira Ali said that the project was a “visible way for people to get involved and reconnect with the local community”.

Project manager Anna Bayraktar has said that she hopes the campaign will “brighten people’s day and will be something for everyone to enjoy”.
