Adam Matthews signs new Charlton Athletic contract

Adam Matthews has signed a new contract with Charlton Athletic.

The right-back became a free agent on July 1 but had been in negotiations over the summer to extend his stay. Matthews has signed a one-year contract.

“I said from the end of last season I wanted to stay at Charlton,” Matthews, 29, told the club’s official website. “I spoke to the manager a couple of times and he seems to really want me here, so that’s always a good sign.

“I’m looking forward to getting started, getting back with the boys and hopefully helping us this season. It’s nice to get it done earlier than last year.”

Addicks owner Thomas Sandgaard said: “I am delighted we’ve been able to bring Adam back to The Valley.

“I was very impressed with the way he played after the arrival of Nigel Adkins, so I’m excited to see him back at Charlton this season.”

Matthews becomes the fourth player from last season to renew terms – the others being Jake Forster-Caskey, Jason Pearce and Ben Watson.
