Former Crystal Palace defender lands national team management role

Former Crystal Palace defender Tony Popovic has been named Australia’s head coach following the resignation of Graham Arnold.

The 51-year-old played 58 times for the Socceroos during his playing career and has signed a two-year deal with the national side.

Popovic joined the Eagles in 2001 from Sanfrecce Hiroshima and left in 2006.

He was named club captain during his time at Selhurst Park and featured 148 times.

Popovic has had managerial spells with Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory.

“It’s a role that comes with great responsibility, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity,” said Popovic.

“This is undoubtedly a very proud moment for myself and my family. To be entrusted with guiding our national team is a privilege I do not take lightly.”
