Josh Edwards: We know that we were nowhere near it during Charlton’s defeat at Stevenage

Charlton defender Josh Edwards says the side will look to recover quickly from Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Stevenage.

The wing-back, signed from Dunfermline for an undisclosed fee in the summer, started a league game for the first time since mid-August after recovering from an ankle injury.

Jordan Roberts’ goal just over 20 minutes from time was enough to settle the game in Stevenage’s favour after a disappointing Charlton display.

Edwards said: “It’s a sore one for us. The way we conceded the goal was not like us. It’s something we’re going to look at and make sure it doesn’t happen again because it’s not like us to concede a goal like that.

“We’ll need to look back and see what happened. The gaffer will pick out which bits he wants to improve on and make sure it doesn’t happen again but as a team performance we were nowhere near it. We know that and we’ll make sure we put it right next time out.

“We did start alright but we started giving away silly free-kicks. I was, myself, guilty of it. Diving in, giving away a free-kick and getting booked. That sort of thing, we can’t do, especially here because they’re good from set-pieces. They’re a good side and good at attacking the ball. It gave them momentum. We just couldn’t recover after that.

“The gaffer made it abundantly clear before the game that if we let the game turn scrappy, that’s what Stevenage want, and they’ll make a good game out of it. They did and if I’m honest probably deserved the three points. We’re going to need to dust ourselves down, get back at it. Thankfully there’s a game Tuesday [away at Bristol Rovers] to try and put it right.”
