AFC Wimbledon head coach Mark Robinson: Results in pre-season mean nothing
Mark Robinson is confident that AFC Wimbledon will not struggle for goals when the League One season starts.
The Dons have scored in two of their six tune-up matches so far. They lost 1-0 at Woking on Tuesday night.
But Robinson says his sole focus has been making sure all of his players get an even amount of game time, believing that will pay dividends when the competitive action starts at Doncaster on August 7.
“For me it’s about the fact we need to be as fit as possible,” said the Wimbledon head coach. “I’ve approached it slightly differently and I want all the squad to have done maximum minutes. After Saturday everyone will have had at least one 90 minutes in the squad.
“If I go to what I feel is my strongest 11 then I might have a little bit more cohesion in our play but some players would only be getting 30 minutes – and we are going to need the whole squad. The downside is that you lack a bit of cohesion and are not forming those partnerships.
“But we’ve still got more than a week to go in terms of build up to our first game and I’m confident we can bring that out in training. The key is that they are all as fit as they can possibly be.
“There are always gains and losses with these things but I believe that my way is the best way in the longer term.
“Some of our football was really, really good on Tuesday. I believe the goals will come, I don’t think pre-season tells you anything in that respect. I’ve known teams not win a game in pre-season and they’ve had a great season and vice-versa. You can’t read anything into it.”
