Army takes time out to support mental health campaign

The army is not the usual place you would expect quiet contemplation.

But the Household Cavalry have taken part in a campaign to encourage people to take time out to chill.

On a brisk winter morning, Trooper Shaun Flanagan, of the Blues and Royals, Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, took time out to support the Royal Parks #WelcomeWinter Mental Health Campaign.

The campaign focuses on taking 20 minutes out of your day to relax, get some head space, and enjoy the daylight, with a walk in the Royal Parks.

London houses several regiments in close proximity to Hyde Park, Green Park and St James’ Park, including the Blues and Royals, and therefore #WelcomeWinter is of particular importance to the Army in London.

As many British soldiers have continued to work over the festive period, whether that be abroad or in the UK, the opportunity to get some head space and relax is key.

Mark Wasilewski, Park Manager for St James’ Park and Green Park, said: “This year has been tough for so many, and it’s never been more important to look after ourselves than now, so even if it looks cold or rainy, step outside for some head space and get that daily dose of daylight with a daily 20-minute walk in the park.”

On taking time out for #WelcomeWinter, Shaun said: “This time of year remains busy for many, including the Armed Forces.

“Taking time out to relax and enjoy nature during the winter daylight is a fantastic activity.”
