Ayoub Assal signs new long-term AFC Wimbledon contract

Ayoub Assal has signed a new contract at AFC Wimbledon until 2024.

The former Millwall youngster has scored four goals in 16 appearances since breaking into the team in early March.

Assal told AFC Wimbledon’s club website: “I’m very very happy. It’s now time for me to kick on, hit another level and keep impressing the fans.

“There was interest from elsewhere, but as soon as Wimbledon’s offer came in, it was only right for me to stay here and sign the contract. I can’t wait to see the fans and play in front of them It’s only right I signed. We want to achieve something great at this club, next season we have a whole season to work with Robbo. The fans can expect something special.

“I’ve worked with Rob Turvey and Robbo for a couple of years now, they know my strengths and weaknesses which helps as a young player coming through and to keep improving. They know what areas I need to improve in as well.

“Ever since I scored my first goal against Shrewsbury, I’ve said to myself I could get a couple more. At the same token I still feel as though I could’ve scored more goals and that’s something I will be working on, which is having a better conversion rate.

“I’m really excited for the fans returning. As a team we have something special and I want the fans to see that.”

Dons head coach Robinson is delighted that Assal has signed a new contract.

“It’s great news,” said Robinson. “This is exactly what we need to be doing, is being excited about our talent and showing our commitment to the young players. We expect commitment from them too, which is exactly what he has shown.

“We have to make sure we recognise the quality we have in the building before we looked outsiide and make sure to nail them down. That’s something we have to keep looking at.”
