Battersea Power Station unveils glass lift to give unique view of capital

Battersea power station is to unveil a glass lift which will travel 109m to the top of one of its iconic chimneys.
The Chimney Lift is one of three new features inside the iconic power station, offering sweeping views of the capital’s skyline.
It will rise above shops, restaurants and office spaces within the old power station, which is still under reconstruction, when it opens to the public in 2021, by which time the Northern line extension to the site is expected to have been completed.
Its passengers will travel up the interior of the north-west chimney in a custom-built glass lift which emerges at the 109m-high summit as a viewing platform, offering panoramic vistas across the capital and into the Home Counties.
Another feature of the complex announced last week is The Venue, an event space inside the centre, designed to host a wide variety of music gigs, product launches, fashion shows, conferences and dinners and other entertainment.
The Event Box, the main space, can hold up to 1,500 people. Visitors will also be able to see the power station’s original control room A: a rare example of a complete 1930s Art Deco interior, overlooking the Turbine Hall through a series of bay windows and balconies.
It once contained the equipment necessary to monitor the electrical output of the power station when it was operational – and it became famous by featuring in films such as The King’s Speech and Monty Python.
Battersea power station is still working with museums and galleries and shops on plans for the 1930s and 1950s turbine halls.
Apple has already pre-let 500,000sqft of office space for its new London HQ there.
The first phase of the £9b redevelopment, Circus West Village, is already open, with more than £1,000 residents living here and over a million people having visited its restaurants, shops, bars and leisure facilities and its 5,000sqft Village Hall.
