Billy Mitchell reveals where Millwall boss is seeking improvements in his game

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Billy Mitchell penned an improved long-term deal this week – and has revealed the areas that Millwall manager Gary Rowett is seeking improvement.

The 20-year-old midfielder has made 13 Championship appearances this season, with hamstring injuries ruling him out until February.

“I think most people have seen the ratting about, pressing, tackling and winning the ball back – which is what my game is based on,” said Mitchell.

“But he [Rowett] wants me to try and pay more attention to playing some more first-time balls around the corner to the front, trying to get on the half-turn more and speeding play up – rather than slowing it down. When I have played in one of those advanced midfield roles I can probably take the ball on the back foot, break the line and play a defence-splitting pass, rather than taking the safe option.

“He [Rowett] has said: ‘We know you’re capable of doing it – just try and add it into your game a bit more’.”
