Blackheath & Bromley Harriers sprinter Adam Gemili enjoyed Monaco outing

BY ZIAD CHAUDRY
Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC Adam Gemili made sure he had plenty of fun competing at Herculis EBS Wanda Diamond League event at Principality of Monaco last Friday.
With strict restrictions in place since Covid-19 that allowed this prestigious athletics event to go ahead in front of a limited crowd at Stade Louis II, which incidentally is the home of French football side AS Monaco, the 26-year-old who was competing in his third race this year clocked 20.68secs for a fourth place finish in the men’s 200m while American Noah Lyles led the way to win in an impressive 19.76.
“Today it was about having fun,” said the multi European and World sprint relay gold medalist. “My coach [Rana Reider] said if you run well then shrug your shoulders but if you don’t run well shrug your shoulders, just have some fun and get competitive.
“It’s been very hard for myself and my group to train this summer but we are trying to get some races in. Its 20.68 for me, I haven’t seen my coach for two months and I haven’t had enough practice on the track so I’m happy.”
Former footballer and current British 200m champion Gemili was glad the meeting organisers and Monaco government allowed spectators inside the stadium and they themselves were treated to a phenomenal men’s 5,000m world record 12:35.36 run by Kenya’s Joshua Cheptegei.
“Having the crowd here is so special so I’m very happy to run in front of them.”
And the ever-smiling Gemili is looking forward to competing in his next races: “I’m running next in Budapest, Stockholm then maybe that’s it, I don’t know. I see how my body feels but I just want to get competitive again, tuck some speed then that’s it, then next year it’s the important one.”
