Charlton Athletic boss hoping to boost centre-back options before transfer window closes
Charlton manager Ben Garner is hoping another centre-back is signed before the transfer window deadline.
The Addicks boss made a change at the back for today’s 1-1 draw against Cambridge United as Ryan Inniss replaced Sam Lavelle in the middle of his defence, partnering Eoghan O’Connell.
Asked about the decision to start with former Palace defender Inniss, Garner said: “At the moment we have got three senior centre-backs so it is about keeping them fit and available.
“We want that competition. Sam Lavelle did really well midweek but equally Ryan played really well last weekend at Sheffield Wednesday.
“I would like another centre-back in so that we’ve got four senior centre-backs, it’s something we’re still working on.
“We’re still working behind the scenes. Hopefully we can get a little bit more depth into the squad.”
Jake Forster-Caskey and Alex Gilbey once again did not make the bench for the Addicks with youngsters Aaron Henry and Richard Chin preferred on the bench.
Charlton are keen to move the duo on so that it frees up room in their budget for more incomings.
“They have trained really well, to be fair to both of them,” said Garner. “We’ve just had good competition in there and I thought today, the type of game it was going to be, that if we needed a change in midfield then it was going to be someone who can unlock a door or a set-piece – that’s why I thought Aaron Henry would be good today. He showed moments when he came on.
“They are still with us at the moment and very much part of the squad. If they get opportunities to come in and play I’m sure they are ready to take them.”
