Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has his say on next month’s transfer window
Lee Bowyer says that Charlton Athletic will not be able to do much business in next month’s transfer window.
The SE7 outfit are having to operate under the League One salary cap.
And the Addicks manager admits the only way that they could really free up funds is if there were players moving on.
“We can’t do much,” said Bowyer. “Again, I come back to the cap.
“Obviously our owner wants to do some business but we’re limited in what we’re allowed to do. We’ve got a little bit left, we’re a little bit under the cap still, because we didn’t spend all the money that we’re able to spend.
“So we’ve got that and we also don’t know the situation if people will try and take any of our players. If that happened – depending who it is – that might free up a little bit to spend. But we’re really limited.
“If someone decides to take one of our loan players back then we will look to replace that.
“The U21 players don’t count in the cap anyway. I’ll try to break it down as easily as I can, if someone takes one of our U21 loans back then we’ll have to replace with an U21. If someone takes one of our senior players and pays a small fee, or whatever money it frees up, we can use that for another senior player if we want to.”

Looks like the EFL’s decision to put all the constraints in re spending etc, has not done Charlton any favours. Amazingly, for the first time in years, we have an owner who is sensibly optimistic about what he can do for Charlton. He appears to have the money, but cannot spend it, absolutely ridiculous. Talk about being in a cleft stick. The rules need to be amended immediately as Charlton are still being ‘punished’ for the misdemeanours of the previous owners.
