Charlton Athletic boss provides transfer window update ahead of Friday’s 5pm deadline
Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has reiterated that the League One salary cap is making slotting the final pieces into his squad more difficult.
The deadline for transfers is 5pm on Friday.
The Addicks have made seven signings in the current window with former Grimsby, Wigan and Cardiff striker Omar Bogle the latest addition last week. Five of those additions have been since Thomas Sandgaard bought the SE7 outfit and the EFL’s player registration embargo was lifted.
Charlton are already near to the salary cap voted in by League One clubs in the summer, although U21 players do not count towards squad expenditure.
It is thought the priority for the Addicks is to add another centre-back.
They have been linked with Leeds United midfielder Robbie Gotts. But Charlton have other areas they are focusing on before any addition would be made in the middle of the park.
Bowyer said: “We need to bring more in. We’re still short in every department – in defence, midfield and up front.
“We’re still working hard behind the scenes. We were hoping to get a couple through the door for today but that hasn’t happened.
“That’s not through lack of trying. It’s out of our hands at times. It always will be when you’ve got hardly anything you can offer. That’s not the owner’s fault – that’s the rules put in place. It [the salary cap] is killing us. It’s just making it so much harder then it should be.
“We’ve got plenty of time and we’ll see what pops up in the last couple of days.
“We’ve tended in the past to get a little gem in the last couple of days and we’ll try to do that.
“But we need to get our business done as quickly as possible so we can get our playing shape stuff into them, otherwise they’ll be going into the game this weekend a bit blind.
“We’ll get there. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – we will get stronger as the season goes on. Just because of peoples’ fitness and people getting used to how we want them to play.”
