Charlton Athletic boss search process – Michael Appleton and Danny Cowley set to be interviewed
Michael Appleton is set to be interviewed this week over the managerial vacancy at Charlton Athletic.
Addicks technical director Andy Scott is in the process of finding a new boss after deciding to sack Dean Holden on Sunday night.
Former Charlton centre-back Jason Pearce has been placed in interim charge and will take the team for Saturday’s League One home game against Fleetwood Town if a successor is not appointed this week.
Appleton, 47, has been out of work since he was dismissed by Blackpool in January, lasting seven months at the then Championship club. He won automatic promotion with Oxford United from League Two in 2016 and they were also twice runners up in the EFL Trophy.
Appleton has also managed Oxford United, Lincoln City, Portsmouth, Blackpool as well as caretaker spells in charge at Leicester City and West Brom.
“I’ve got no doubt I’ll be successful and as a manager all you want is a chance,”Appleton told the Daily Mail earlier this month. “I’m not asking for the biggest budget. I know the players out there and I’ve managed in three of the four leagues.
“I still have the hunger and desire to manage, and I’ve been an assistant manager and coach in the Premier League and I wouldn’t rule out those roles either. It will be interesting to see what comes next.”
Charlton are also set to speak to Danny Cowley. The 44-year-old has been out of work since leaving Portsmouth in January 2023.
The University of Greenwich graduate won two promotions with Lincoln City, taking them from the National League to League One, before being headhunted by Huddersfield Town.
It was a New Year’s Day defeat to Charlton which saw Pompey dispense of his services.
