Charlton Athletic chief reveals details of summer chat with defender

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer wants to turn Tom Lockyer into a key part of Wales international squad.

The 24-year-old centre-back joined on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers in the summer and has played every minute in the Championship.

Lockyer and Jonny Williams have both been selected by Wales for fixtures against Azerbaijan and Belarus next month.

“Tom has been excellent,” said Bowyer. “He has strengths and weaknesses. He is improving all the time – and he will keep improving.

“I said in the summer [to him] that our aim is to get you to be a regular in the Wales side, that is what we are going to try and do.”

Cardiff-born Lockyer has been capped five times by Wales, making his debut against Panama in 2017.
