Charlton Athletic moving closer to landing Cheltenham’s Alfie May as transfer negotiations continue

Charlton Athletic are edging closer to a deal for Cheltenham Town’s prolific attacker Alfie May.

The South London Press understands that there are still some kinks to be ironed out as negotiations continue for the 30-year-old, born in Gravesend, but that there is confidence a deal will get over the line.

May has also attracted a bid from ambitious League Two club Gillingham with Bristol Rovers showing interest.

But the former Millwall youngster, released at the age of 14 due to his size, favours a switch back to South London with personal terms not set to prove any issue.

Charlton have made two signings in the summer transfer window with goalkeeper Harry Isted and centre-back Lloyd Jones arriving on free transfers once their contracts expired at Luton Town and Cambridge United respectively.

The Addicks are in ongoing talks about some of the structure surrounding the May move.

Charlton need to boost their frontline with Chuks Aneke not fit at the start of pre-season due to a calf injury. Miles Leaburn also hobbled off with an ankle injury against Welling United last weekend, with no update yet on the severity of his knock.

May can play anywhere across the frontline.

He scored 22 goals last season, 20 of them in 39 League One appearances. If he does move on then his last goal in Cheltenham colours will be the one he notched against Charlton on the final day of last season.

May played non-league for Bromley and Erith & Belvedere before catching the eye at Hythe Town.

He landed a move back into the professional game with Doncaster in January 2017, scoring 23 goals in 116 appearances.

May netted 26 times in all competitions in the 2021-22 season for Cheltenham.
