Charlton Athletic striker reveals he played on with back issue for three months

Charlton Athletic striker Jayden Stockley has revealed that he played on with a back problem for three months before his current spell on the sidelines.

The Addicks have badly missed their top-scorer, who has not featured since December 18.

And Stockley recently told My New Football Club on Acast about the problem.

“I had foot drop in my left foot, because I had a nerve problem coming from my back,” said Stockley, speaking before the EFL Trophy defeat to Hartlepool. “I had an epidural last week and hopefully that corrects it.

“It’s coming back slowly. I think I’m a month away [from being back] possibly. I’ve got two slipped discs that are sat on the nerve. I played with a bad back for three months, so it’s probably a bit of my fault as well. I took tablets, things like that, getting through games.”

Asked if he was pressured to play, Stockley replied: “No, no – it’s on you. I was going through a bit of a purple patch so I was like ‘I’m not coming out of the team’. I didn’t realise it would happen – I’ve never been injured in my career. It is very, very boring.”

Jayden has my sympathy. I suffered a prolapsed disc several years ago and there is no pain that matches it. Just turning over in bed l went into a cold sweat. A lot depends upon whether the disc, as in my case has actually raptured the surrounding membrane in which case it will need to be handled very carefully with plenty of exercise to take the nerve away from the backbone. It will restrict movement.
