Charlton boss expects on-loan West Ham man to attract transfer interest

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer is expecting clubs to bid for Josh Cullen this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international has played every minute for the Addicks since the Championship season resumed.

Cullen is under contract at West Ham until the summer of 2021 after the east Londoners activated a clause in his contract.

He has spent the last two campaigns on loan with Charlton and become a firm fans’ favourite.

“When we lost him for a few months [due to injury] it left a big hole,” said Bowyer. “He’s made such a big difference, so we have to be careful [not to overload his minutes], for sure.

“If West Ham went down then I think he’d go back and play there. If they don’t go down then I don’t know what will happen. I’ll be surprised if someone doesn’t try to buy him – he’s a manager’s dream.

“Josh is just a machine. He is everywhere. He breaks so much up and doesn’t give the ball away. He’s been very good in the last three matches.”

Cullen, goalkeeper Dillon Phillips and centre-backs Tom Lockyer and Jason Pearce have been Charlton’s standout performers since the action restarted in June.

“Dillon’s come back in good shape,” said Bowyer. “He’s lost a bit of weight – lockdown was good to him.

“He’s looked good and the two centre-halves have been solid. It’s exactly what you need in those situations.”
