Charlton boss Lee Bowyer: I’m like a plumber who is missing vital tools to get the job done

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lee Bowyer reckons the injuries which have ravaged his Charlton Athletic squad is leaving him short of the personnel to pick up more Championship points.

The Addicks have collected only two points from their last eight league fixtures and lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Although Lyle Taylor returned from a knee injury to play his part on Teesside, Charlton are still without a host of first-teamers who would boost Bowyer’s options.

“I said to someone yesterday that it’s like being a plumber and you’re going to work and you’ve only got half your tools,” said the Addicks boss. “Can you fix this? Well, not really. I need that tool to do this and that tool to do that. We’ve had more than half our squad taken away.

“It’s trying to juggle and put out a team so we can actually compete – that’s the hardest thing.

“Even with our full squad it is tough. But to take half of it away – you’re relying on kids and people who ain’t really ready.

“Listen, they are trying. But it’s difficult. We need the injuries to come back. We need to find a way to win games. That’s what we’re trying to do.

“It’s difficult at the moment but we will come through it – I’ve got no doubt. Once we start getting some bodies back then we’ll have more options.

“You are down to bare bones. We’ve got kids on the bench and other teams are bringing people off the bench and they are making differences. Unfortunately we don’t have that option.

“Slowly but surely they’ll start coming back and then we’ll start picking up points again.”
