Charlton chief unwilling to discuss transfer window move for Plymouth defender

Charlton head coach Michael Appleton was reluctant to talk about the club’s move for Plymouth Argyle defender Macaulay Gillesphey.

The 28-year-old left-sided centre-back was at The Valley today to watch the Addicks’ League One match against Oxford United, which ended in a 2-1 defeat.

Gillesphey played 35 League One matches last season for Plymouth as they won promotion.

He started off in Newcastle United’s academy before joining Carlisle United after being released. He made a free transfer switch to Brisbane Roar before heading back to the UK to pen a deal with Plymouth in July 2021.

“Well until it is done, I don’t want to say too much,” said Appleton, when asked about Gillesphey. “You never say never in this game but until someone actually tells me that it is finally done and dusted them I don’t really want to comment too much.

“Clearly, like I’ve said, we need to do the ones who can impact the 11 – or potentially impact the 11. It clearly makes it that little bit harder.

“But it won’t be for the want of being aggressive, being on the front foot and trying to make things happen.”
