Charlton confirm Alfie May transfer – signing an initial two-year deal at The Valley from Cheltenham Town
Charlton Athletic have confirmed the signing of Alfie May on a two-year deal from League One rivals Cheltenham Town.
There is an option for a further 12 months at The Valley.
May joins Harry Isted and Lloyd Jones through the doors at the South Londoners this summer.
The 30-year-old, who had spells at Doncaster Rovers and Hythe Town during his career, has scored 50 League One goals in 161 appearances.
Our paper understands Charlton have shelled out a fee in the region of £250,000 for the Kent-raised forward.
Both Bristol Rovers and Gillingham had been reportedly keen on signing the forward. However, the Addicks have won the race for his signature.
After completing his move, May said: “I’m delighted to be here. I’m a local lad, so to come back home with my family means a lot.
“You see the support that Charlton have at The Valley and what it brings as a stadium when the fans get going and you want to be a part of that as a player. I can’t wait to get started.”
Manager Dean Holden is thrilled to bolster his forward ranks. He added: “I’m absolutely delighted that Alfie has chosen to sign for Charlton Athletic. He’s a player I’ve been keen to recruit since the very end of last season and he showed a great deal of desire and hunger to join us over other clubs.
“As well as being a proven goalscorer, his work rate for the team is exceptional and from the first conversation we had I was really impressed with not only his ambition but also his humility. I can’t wait to start working with him.”
CEO Peter Storrie said: “The purchase of Alfie May is one we’ve been working on for while. There were a lot of clubs looking to sign him but he was a key target for us and he wanted to join us, so we’re all really pleased we’ve got the deal done and he’s a Charlton player.
“We’re aiming to build a squad that can compete for a top-six place in the league next season and it was important we added a goalscorer of Alfie’s ability. Like a lot of the club’s fans, I’m looking forward to watching him in a Charlton shirt.”
