Charlton goalkeeper benched for Ghana’s friendly win over Nicaragua

Charlton Athletic keeper Joe Wollacott was benched for Ghana’s 1-0 friendly win over Nicaragua on Tuesday.

The stopper played the full 90 minutes for his country in a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in France on Friday, Tottenham striker Richarlison scoring twice.

Ghana manager Otto Addo opted for Orlando Pirates’ Richard Ofori to play in midweek.

Wollacott is expected to take Craig MacGillivray’s place against Oxford on Saturday.

MacGillivray deputised last weekend as Charlton lost 3-1 at Barnsley.

Addicks boss Ben Garner told the South London Press last week that he had been delighted with Wollacott’s impact since arriving in SE7.

“It was a no-brainer [to sign him] – a goalkeeper of his quality, age and potential who was available on a free transfer. It was just a very simple piece of business for me.

“He’s come in and done exceptionally well. He’s probably had one mistake against Forest Green, that I know he’ll be very frustrated with. But it was a fantastic response at Fleetwood last week – he could do nothing with the goal and, other than that, he was excellent.

“He’s a really good asset for the football club.”
