Charlton’s Jayden Stockley forced to play through illness during loss at Sheffield Wednesday

Charlton striker Jayden Stockley played through illness at Sheffield Wednesday today, Ben Garner has revealed.

The Addicks forward lasted just over an hour at Hillsborough before being replaced by youngster Miles Leaburn.

The Owls were able to bring on the likes of the experienced former Millwall man Lee Gregory and Tyreeq Bakinson, who would go on to score the winning goal, at around the same time. It was the hosts who looked more likely in the final 30 minutes after Charlton had impressed for an hour.

Chuks Aneke missed the trip to South Yorkshire and will be assessed before Tuesday’s home game with Plymouth – which meant Stockley was asked to play through sickness.

“Just a headache, felt a bit under the weather this morning and a little bit shivery,” said Garner when asked what was wrong with Stockley.

“We’re hopeful that’s nothing major and just a little bit of a cold. We’re hoping he’s fine for Tuesday.

“You’re always going to miss Jayden when he’s not on the pitch. He was under the weather today. It shows his character to go out there and play and put in a really good shift for an hour.

“I just thought Miles would freshen it up and give is a little more energy after the shift that Jayden had put in. We were still well within the game. We weren’t quite having as much possession as we did for the first hour, but we were still well in the game. There wasn’t too much danger. The minimum we should have come out with was a point.

“Undoubtably, [Sheffield Wednesday] have got greater strength in depth than we have. That’s reflective of the transfer budget that I’m sure they’ve got here. We’re still getting a couple of players up to speed. We’re having to do that in games. We’re only going to get stronger and improve.”
