Crewe 1 AFC Wimbledon 1 – Dons unlucky not to end their wait for a League One victory

BY DAVE HUNT-JACKSON

AFC Wimbledon grabbed a well-deserved point at Crewe although they may feel they should have had all three.

Joe Pigott gave the Dons a shock lead as early as the second minute, leaping superbly above two Crewe defenders to head Cheye Alexander’s pinpoint cross beyond Dave Richards in the Alex goal.

Less of a shock was the South Londoners failure to hold on to the lead as Oliver Finney rifled home from a yard out as a cross rebounded to him from the inside of the post.

It was all Wimbledon for the rest of the half as they responded well to being pegged back. Jack Rudoni was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty as he was tripped trying to turn in the box and Alexander was unluckier still as he smashed a drive against the crossbar.

The second half was much as the first, with both sides seeking a winner.

Dave Richards had to be at his best to deny Pigott a second but try as they might neither side could break the deadlock and the visitors will feel that this is a chance missed to grab their first League victory of 2021.
