Cyclists could soon see permanent changes in Croydon town centre

Cyclists could soon see permanent changes in Croydon town centre.
In August 2020, Croydon Council put temporary cycle lanes in using TfL funding made available during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The authority now wants to make the changes permanent.
It would see permanent protected cycle lanes built in the High Street and Mint Walk – temporary versions of this have been in place since last summer.
The changes also include bringing bus stops closer to the town centre rather than having to divert onto the Park Lane roundabout.
There would also be a series of new cycle lanes near East Croydon Station in Dingwall Road, Landsdowne Road and Sydenham Road.
The council wants to create a new public space at the former junction with Lansdowne Road, new zebra crossings and improved taxi and loading facilities.
There are also permanent changes proposed in London Road from Thornton Heath Pond to North End.
This includes separating cyclists from vehicles, more pedestrian crossings and making the 20mph speed limit permanent.
There would also be parking and loading bays introduced on side roads for local businesses.
Councillor Muhammad Ali, cabinet member for sustainable Croydon said: “Everyone can do their bit to make healthier, sustainable travel choices, but it is our responsibility to enable those choices by making streets safer and more friendly spaces for walking and cycling.”
