EXCLUSIVE: Double Olympic medallist Alex Yee on going back to his Kent Athletic Club roots in Lewisham

Alex Yee has described how it feels to return to “where it all began”, after winning a silver and gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Lewisham-born Yee won silver in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Men’s Individual Triathlon as well as a gold medal in the mixed triathlon – with Yee being the competitor to cross the finish line for his team.

“It’s bizarre,” said Yee on Thursday August 12, when he went back – with his medals – to Ladywell Arena, in Silvermere Road, where he first started competitive running. “It’s just really special to come back to where it all began.

“I’ve struggled to process how it really feels and to come back here and see how many kids are excited to see me, and to see the mural they’ve done for me in Brockley made me feel immensely proud of everything.

“It’s still hard to put into words, but it’s amazing.”

The 23-year-old is striving to become even better and spoke of the importance of continuing to improve.

He said: “For me, triathlon and sport is all about being the perfect athlete and racing to the best of your ability and even though I had amazing results in Tokyo, I still feel as though I have a lot more to achieve, internally in myself with swimming, cycling and running.

“I just want to become a better athlete. Hopefully that will bring bigger and better things, but we’ll have to see what happens. Enjoyment of the sport is ultimately the key thing.”
