Former Fulham, QPR and Leeds striker makes big claim about current Millwall side
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Matt Smith reckons that the team spirit at Millwall is the best he has experienced in the Championship.
Lions frontman Tom Bradshaw made a similar claim to the South London Press after the recent victory at Derby County.
And Smith has also hailed the togetherness – and feels it will make boss Gary Rowett extra mindful not to affect the dressing room chemistry in a negative way in terms of January arrivals.
“The team spirit we have here is the best I’ve experienced in my eight years in the Championship, the best I’ve witnessed,” said Smith.
“I think that’s a big weapon for us as well.
“Obviously a lot of credit goes to the previous regime for assembling that group.
“The new management are very aware of how tight-knit we are as a small 20 or 22-man squad. As much as you want to get quality through the door in January I’m sure he’s got another eye on that they gel in with the group we have here because it’s a big weapon for us.
“Everyone’s a top lad, I can’t speak highly enough.
“Every time someone asks me what they’re like I say the best group I’ve worked with – and that includes a team that I got promoted with and won a trophy with.
“There are lads I’ve stayed in touch with and remained close with, but hand on heart this is a top bunch of lads and Pearcey [Alex Pearce] really galvanises us.”
