Gary Cahill has message for Crystal Palace team-mates ahead of Liverpool clash

BY ANDREW MCSTEEN

Gary Cahill can’t wait to attack Crystal Palace’s fixtures after the international break.

The Eagles are winless in four Premier League matches and have scored the second-fewest goals (12) – only Watford (eight) have managed less.

Next up are table-toppers Liverpool after the international break at Selhurst Park.

“I see the character in the team and it’s a fantastic character, honestly.

“We’ll be fine. I am looking forward to the coming months after the international break.

“The most important thing when you come out the back of these [tough] fixtures is not to think ‘oh, ok we’re alright now’. It’s very dangerous to do that. You’ve got to go the other way – you’ve got to come out of the back of these games and go even harder, as hard as you possibly can.

“Then it is about consistency. The performance levels are good and, for sure, we can improve on last year. That’s what you’ve always got to strive to do.”

Martin Kelly, Mamadou Sakho, Scott Dann and James Tomkins have all played alongside Cahill in the heart of the backline.

“The competition is great, of course it is, and it is throughout the whole squad – to try and drive to get the best out of every player, that’s the most important thing,” said Cahill to the South London Press.

“Complacency is the worst thing in football. You need someone in front of you, behind you, pushing you, and then you get the best out of yourself, and the team.”

With a number of Palace players away for international duty, the training ground at Beckenham is light on numbers.

“You get an opportunity to have a break,” said Cahill. “You have a few days off but when you train it is harder than you probably do normally, because you don’t have to tone the training down for games.

“It’s a good chance to get a lot of fitness, as well as resting your body. We know in England what it’s like over Christmas – it’s intense.

“You have this last opportunity now to just rest and prepare your body, as well as you can, going into a difficult Christmas period.”
