Gary Cahill to discuss Crystal Palace future at the end of the season as defender aims to push up Premier League table

BY SAM SMITH

Gary Cahill wants to resolve his Crystal Palace future at the end of the season, with the defender’s contract set to expire in the summer.

The 35-year-old is one of 13 members of Crystal Palace’s first team who are out of contract at the end of the season, including loanee Michy Batshuayi.

Cahill has made 41 appearances so far across two seasons. The former Chelsea man says he has enjoyed his spell at Selhurst Park but will discuss his future at the end of the campaign.

He said: “Ever since I set foot through the door I’ve enjoyed my time, it’s a fantastic football club. I’ve spoken before, I’m relaxed about the situation.

“I think we’ll get towards the end of the season and see what both parties want to do. That’s a conversation to be had further down the line and then we’ll go from there.

“There’s no drama on my behalf, I’m very casual with it and delighted just to be back playing well and winning games for this football club. That’s the priority so, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time since I’ve been here.”

Cahill was excellent as Palace defeated West Bromwich Albion to lift them on to 37 points. Luka Milivojevic’s penalty was the only goal of the game. Cahill and defensive partner Cheikhou Kouyate superbly kept the Midlands outfit at bay.

The South Londoners are now 11 points above the relegation zone and their Premier League status looks extremely secure with nine games left. Cahill says there is now an opportunity to finish as high up the table as possible.

Roy Hodgson’s side now have a three-week break due to the upcoming FA Cup weekend and the international break.

“I think there are different goals but the first goal is to be in the Premier League next season,” Cahill continued. “It’s the responsibility for the club and us as players to do that and we’re very, very, very close now to doing that, especially going into the international break because we need that.

“We knew this was a huge game in terms of the result so it’s great that we delivered the three points and now we’re looking very healthy in the league.

“When we come back from the international break it’s about the desire to try and push on up the league now, really, with a very difficult run-in.”
