‘Help’ needed for Charlton Athletic squad as time begins to run out in summer transfer window

Charlton Athletic manager Nigel Adkins knows that more signings are needed to “help” his current squad.

The Addicks are winless after their opening four League One matches and lost 2-0 at home to Wigan on Saturday.

Next up is another Valley fixture against Crewe this weekend.

Charlton have made seven signings in the current window but Corey Blackett-Taylor, the most recent addition at the end of last week, is only on a short-term deal until January.

Asked if the club’s early-season struggles would help ramp up activity ahead of the deadline next week, Adkins said: “There have been things going on behind the scenes.

“We’ve got to make sure the budget that is being worked to, we can utilise it as best we can to help the group.

“We are all feeling it at the moment because the results are not what we want. We’ve had spells of good performance – but not enough – and we’ve been punished with some goals.

“We’ve got to help the group. It’s a young group, with a couple of good senior players in there, but we need to help the group because that’s important.”

  • I thought I would give it a bit of time before making my first comment of the season. Well, here it is. Having watched 2 games at The Valley, where I cannot recall the visiting ‘keeper having to make a worthwhile save, it is abundantly clear that this squad either not good enough to compete for promotion, or the manager has got it all wrong in his tactics, such as they are. Nigel Adkins had a decent end to last season and I thought he was the man for the job of taking Charlton forward, but something has gone wrong so far this season. With only a few days left of this transfer window, a couple of quality players are clearly required, if not, then I don’t see Nigel Adkins doing anything with this squad, other than finishing mid table. However, I am also concerned with what is going on behind the scenes. Mr. Sandgaard, our saviour from last season, may not have enough cash to satisfy those greedy agents and players, some who I understand Charlton were interested in, but could not afford the wage demands, hence they have gone elsewhere in League one. Perhaps this is the reason why Charlton have not bolstered the squad with a couple of quality players. This is a big week for Charlton, as I am sure that without some really good signings, I have some early reservations about where my beloved club will finish by May next year. The expert say that you must play 10 games before making any predictions, but, from what I have seen thus far, it is a worry already. I do not question the effort, but tactics and the lack of creating chances is a real concern. Again I say, a big week ahead for all concerned with Charlton Athletic.
