Heroic Horsman takes maiden Moto2 win at Donington Park
Rookie Moto2 rider, Cameron Horsman, secured a dramatic first British GP2 Cup win at Donington Park at the weekend.
The Lewisham rider started 20th on the grid (6th in class) on the combined GP2/Supersport grid at a rain soaked Donington Park. Despite the conditions, the Chassis Factory Nova Go Racing rider continually posted faster lap times than his GP2 rivals hauling them in one by one to take victory in race one in the Moto2 category.
Because of the weather conditions the organisers scrapped the qualifying sessions and set the grid positions for the 12-lap race one from the best free practice times from Friday.
Horsman made a steady get away from the line in race 1 as a thick mist of spray enveloped the riders further down the field.
Horsman was quickly onto the back wheel of two fellow GP2 riders before passing them on lap four to move into third as another Moto2 rider slid off in the conditions.
The number 72 was able to maintain his rapid pace during the difficult track conditions as rain continued to fall. He soon found himself closing in on another rival. Horsman was lapping almost a second quicker than his opponents.
On the penultimate lap he set his fastest lap of the race to move into second position. He was then rapidly homing in on the back wheel of the race leader and his teammate Tom Oliver. In the final part of the lap Horsman was able to ease passed Oliver and take his first British GP2 Cup race win.
Starting race two from sixth on the grid, Unfortunately Horsman didn’t get the start he wanted, dropping to 12th in the initial tussle off the grid and finishing the first lap in 15th place overall.
Horsman recovered and regained his flow moving back into fourth position in the British GP2 class on the fifth lap of 14. He then battled with Mason Law and his teammate Tom Oliver for several laps.
Later on in the race the arm pump issues he suffered at Oulton Park returned and he struggled to match the pace of his fellow GP2 riders.
At the flag he had to settle for a 6th place in the Moto2 category but it has been a very successful weekend.
Horsman said, “To get my first win was unbelievable. The track conditions were really bad on Saturday but I just kept a good rhythm and late on in the race could see I was catching the race leaders. To take a win in my rookie year in Moto2 was fantastic. Thanks to all my sponsors and
especially to Chassis Factory and Nova Go Racing for a superb bike.”
Cameron Horsman is sixth in the championship standings on 118 points just 30 behind the championship leader in the closely fought Moto2 category.
The last round of the series takes place at Brands Hatch from the 16th to 18th October.
