High profile school whose head is an ex-pro footballer gets ‘good’ rating from inspectors

Ark Globe Academy, near Elephant & Castle, was assessed by Ofsted in November and December last year, with pupils saying they are proud to be part of the school.

The report published today said: “Leaders have high aspirations for every pupil.

Staff are united to achieve the school’s mission statement, which is to prepare all pupils for university and to be leaders in their community.”

Inspectors added: “Pupils feel proud of the school.”

Ark Globe, whose head, former pro footballer Matt Jones was given the OBE two months ago, received an Outstanding grade for its early years provision and behaviour.

The report said: “Right from the start of early years, staff set high expectations for pupils’ behaviour…Throughout the school, these high expectations of pupils’ behaviour continue….”

The report highlighted the school’s determination that “every child, no matter what their starting point, will become a fluent reader”, and this focus continued as pupils moved through the year groups, with older year groups reading to younger children.

Inspectors noted the school’s artwork, which features the Globe wings visually demonstrating pupils’ ambitions for themselves. The motto, “we are wings, and we want to fly,” is felt by pupils who “all believe they can succeed.”

The report added: “All pupils, at every stage, receive helpful information about careers education, information and guidance.

In the sixth form, students are well prepared for their next steps in education. Students achieve highly in the sixth form. Pupils value being part of a diverse school.”

Inspectors also praised leaders for their safeguarding, mental health, and well-being provision as “Pupils could talk confidently about their lessons on mental health awareness.”

Mr Jones,  formerly a professional footballer for Southend United, joined as principal of Ark Globe Academy in Elephant and Castle in 2012.

He said: “We believe in our pupils, and from the day they join us, we do everything we can to help them succeed. Through a range of enrichment days and events at local businesses or projects in the community, we are enhancing what they are learning in class. I am delighted that inspectors were able to see how ambitious our young people are.

“I’d like to thank the Ark Globe Academy team of extremely hardworking and dedicated teaching staff and support staff for everything they do and will continue to do. I’d also like to send my appreciation to our parents, families, governors, and Ark.”

Sian Maddrell, Regional Director, said: “Ark Globe is a wonderful community with high aspirations, strong provision and a hard-working team, united in their commitment to our students. I am so pleased to see this recognised in the recent Ofsted inspection and want to send my gratitude to everyone for their continued hard work.”
