Hockey: Wimbledon pass university challenge as Mantell scores twice

By Peter Marsden.

Wimbledon are seventh in the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division after a 3-1 win at Brooklands Manchester University.

It was only the Dons’ second victory of the campaign.

Brooklands led 1-0 at the break but Wimbledon gradually increased the pressure and levelled on 41 minutes.

Simon Mantell produced excellent work inside the D to produce a pinpoint cross which was swept in by Ben Arnold.

Wimbledon won a short corner in the 59th minute and Mantell’s fierce  reverse stick shot went through the smallest of gaps under the keeper to hit the backboard.

The South Londoners won another short corner on 62 minutes and Ed Horler’s powerful drag flick whistled into the top left corner of the net.

Wimbledon are still without a number of key players. Jonty Griffiths missed the match due to sustaining concussion at England training.

Peter Small, Iain Gordon and George Waller, 17, were worthy replacements plus Nathanael Stewart was back from duty with the Australian under-21 side.
