Jade Dernbach to end 19-year career at Surrey CCC
Jade Dernbach has announced he will be leaving Surrey at the end of the season, after 19 years at the Oval, with the intention of getting regular first team cricket.
Dernbach, who, along with Gareth Batty, is Surrey’s joint leading wicket taker in T20 cricket and who captained the South Londoners in the Vitality Blast in 2018 and 2019, has been at Surrey since he was a teenager.
After representing the club in age group cricket, Dernbach made his first-class debut against India A in 2003 and his second competitive start came on T20 Finals Day, at the Oval, in 2005. The 35-year-old has gone on to take 717 wickets in 421 appearances across all formats, and was capped 58 times by England between 2011 and 2014.
Dernbach won the man of the match award for his 4-30 in the 2011 final of the Clydesdale Bank 40 – which Surrey won by 5 wickets – and was an integral part of the side that was crowned county champions in 2018.
Since then, however, he has had just 13 outings for the South Londoners in the Vitality Blast and two on loan at Derbyshire.
“I would like to thank Surrey for everything they have done for me, this has been my home for the best part of 20 years and I will certainly miss it,” said Dernbach.
“It’s the right time for me to take on a new challenge as my opportunities would have been limited at Surrey, but I wish all the players the best of luck for the future and look forward to returning to the Kia Oval in the near future.”
Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, added: “On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Jade for everything he’s done and achieved for Surrey – he is a real club man through and through and has been outstanding in the way he’s played his cricket.
“When wearing the three feathers on his chest he has always been fully committed and has offered his knowledge and experience to all his team-mates. He leaves with our very best wishes and will always be warmly welcomed back at The Kia Oval in the future. Thank you Jader, you’ll be missed.”
