Jake Forster-Caskey on getting back to his best in a Charlton shirt – and why Liam Millar can’t claim Bristol Rovers goal

Jake Forster-Caskey reckons regular football is bringing the best out of him – with Charlton’s matchwinner at the weekend clocking up his fifth consecutive 90 minutes.

The 26-year-old is back as one of the Addicks’ most influential players.

Forster-Caskey missed nearly the entire 2018-19 campaign due to a cruciate knee ligament injury. And then he had a number of niggling problems which affected his game time in the Championship.

But the former Brighton and Milton Keynes man made his 13th start this season in the 1-0 victory at Bristol Rovers – just shy of double what he managed in English football’s second tier last season.

And Charlton manager Lee Bowyer had stated in the build up to the trip to the Memorial Stadium that Forster-Caskey had been their best midfield performer.

“It was about getting a run in the team and games under my belt,” said Forster-Caskey. “After a long-term injury it is always hard. Last year I picked up a lot of niggling injuries. This year I feel fit and back to myself.

“I just want to keep helping the team out when I can.

“I feel as fit as ever. I’m in a good place.”

Some media outlets awarded Charlton’s goal yesterday to Liam Millar.

But Forster-Caskey was adamant his corner kick went directly in for his fourth goal of the campaign.

“It’s my goal. He’s missed the ball. I’ve just looked at Sky Sports and they haven’t given it to me – I’ve already sent a few texts to try and get it changed already.

“He [Millar] just admitted in the shower that he didn’t touch it. I said his first goal needs to be one where he puts it in the stanchion – not missing a flick. He’s not claiming that one.”

Charlton ended a five-game winless spell in League One. Their 10th victory of the season moved them up to sixth in the standings.

Forster-Caskey said: “We had a much better shape out of possession – at times we picked and chose when to press. We played really well. Maybe we could’ve taken a few more chances.”
