Ladbroke Grove steel band to feature in new series on National Lottery beneficiaries

A steel band is being featured in a new series on National Lottery beneficiaries for its work during lockdown.

Ladbroke Grove-based Metronomes Steel Orchestra will have its work highlighted by comedian Joe Wilkinson.

The group has taken its steel pan lessons online and has also started a reading club encouraging people from around the world to read stories to children.

Eversley Mills, manager of Steel Metronomes Orchestra, said: “Since the outbreak of Covid-19, Metronomes Steel Orchestra has turned into a full-time online organisation and has continued to bring something really special to people’s lives.

“It was vital for us to continue our work in order to keep our band members and the wider community engaged during such nervous and uncertain times.

“Thanks to funding from The National Lottery, as well as continuing our online jamming sessions, we were able to start a reading club for youths and have been encouraging children from the Caribbean to come together and read stories online. This has been hugely successful and I am very proud of it”.

Joe Wilkinson added: “Thanks to National Lottery players, up to £600 million has been made available to help communities throughout the UK amid the coronavirus crisis.

“The Good News Bulletin features how people and projects have rallied together to support each other during lockdown.

“I promise you there won’t be any Zoom quizzes or online Zumba, but just a few heart-warming stories and terrific tales of, well, good news and great people.”

From communities rallying together to provide barbecues for a whole village to every day heroes helping those most in need, The National Lottery’s Good News Bulletin features people and projects across the UK that have been using National Lottery funding to adapt during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The bulletin launches as The National Lottery announces its search for nominees for the 2020 National Lottery Awards.

This year the annual search for the UK’s most popular National Lottery-funded projects will, for the first time, honour individuals who have made an extraordinary impact in their community, especially those who have adapted during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
