Lee Bowyer hoping his loyalty to Charlton Athletic is “recognised” as he turns down Huddersfield Town’s play for his services

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lee Bowyer is hoping that his commitment to Charlton Athletic gets “recognised” after he snubbed interest from Huddersfield Town.

At one stage the highly-rated Addicks manager was odds-on favourite for the Terrier’s managerial vacancy.

Huddersfield finally gave up on their attempts to tempt Bowyer away from Charlton earlier this week when they handed the boss job to Danny Cowley.

Bowyer took the decision to stay in charge in SE7, despite the fact that his contract only runs until June. The same applies to assistant boss Johnnie Jackson and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall.

Even after promotion from League One last season, Bowyer had to wait until June 18 to agree a 12-month extension with owner Roland Duchatelet.

Bowyer said: “I think this was the right place for me to be.

“That is why I am still here and hopefully my loyalty gets recognised, because it doesn’t really happen in football too much anymore.”

Bowyer is playing a game here. He was never approached by Huddersfield, their one and only target was Danny Cowley

He’s maybe saying to Roland, give me a long contract whilst paying me the going championship rate.
