Lee Bowyer resigns as Charlton Athletic manager – with Birmingham role up for grabs
Lee Bowyer has resigned as Charlton Athletic manager.
The South London Press has been told that he told the playing squad this morning that he was stepping down.
It is expected that Bowyer will take charge of another of his former clubs – Birmingham City – who dispensed with Aitor Karanka over the weekend.
The 44-year-old was approaching three years in charge at The Valley and has previously been linked with the Blues before they appointed Karanka. He was also previously wanted by Huddersfield Town.
Charlton have yet to make any public comment.
The Addicks are in action against Bristol Rovers tomorrow and it is unclear whether assistant boss Johnnie Jackson has also departed – as the club fans’ favourite would be expected to take over managerial duties.

That is all we needed. I have been a supporter for 60 years and have seen many ups and downs, but why is it that Charlton football Club can never seem to get it together for any decent period of time ?. We have had a series of debatable owners over the years, but have always done well as far as managers have been concerned, who have managed to put a team together with limited resources. Even Curbs had to do that ! At last we have an owner who cares and it all seemed rosy for the years ahead, with Bowyer and his team in charge. However, it must be said that results have not been encouraging and a few weeks ago, I commented that something did not seem right at the Club. Unfortunately, I have been proved right. The question is, was it Lee Bowyer that was the problem, or was it the players not giving 100%, for whatever reason.? After Saturday’s rather poor showing, I think it is more the players than Lee Bowyer, but as manager, he does have to shoulder some of the blame. All very sad, as for sentimental reasons, Bowyer and co with money to spend in the summer, would have been nice to see what he could have done. However, sentiment does not win matches and that is what football is all about.
Well done Lee Bowyer and thanks for all the great times you gave us and to have had the pleasure of seeing The Valley rocking with delight and a Wembley winning performance as well, will be something I will always cherish and be grateful for. Good luck for the future Lee.
