Lee Bowyer says it may be time to rest Ian Maatsen after Chelsea loanee picks up knock during Charlton’s draw with Swindon

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Only Darren Pratley and Chris Gunter have played more outfield minutes than Ian Maatsen for Charlton so far this season – and Lee Bowyer admits it might be time to give the Chelsea loanee a rest after he picked up a knock during the 2-2 draw at The Valley with Swindon Town.

The 18-year-old, lent from the Stamford Bridge outfit for the entirety of the season, limped off during the second-half of the game with the Robins and Bowyer says it may be time to ease off the young Dutchman.

“He’s taken a little knock on the knee,” explained the Addicks manager.

“It was a collision of knees I think. I saw him limping about before that as well. Fair play to him, he’s 18 years old and he hasn’t stopped. He’s played every minute of every game since he’s come, apart from the suspension.

“It might be time to give him a little rest now as you can tell he’s feeling the effects a little bit.”

Bowyer also got a first look at new arrival Jayden Stockley. The striker has joined on loan from Preston North End for the rest of the season and almost made an immediate impact as he was introduced from the bench midway through the second-period against Swindon – only to see his header at goal saved by Mark Travers.

Bowyer said: “He was good. Physicality. Held the ball up, brought others into play. Dangerous in the box.

“He’s someone that goes and attacks every ball that gets crossed. I was happy with what he brought for the last twenty minutes he was on.”
