Millwall manager Neil Harris signed Harry Toffolo from Norwich City yesterday on a short-term deal – and has challenged the former England under-20 international to prove he is Championship class.

The 22-year-old left-back has joined the Lions on a free transfer. He will be a free agent at the end of June.

Toffolo’s arrival only fuels talk of club cap- tain Tony Craig leaving The Den before Wednesday’s transfer deadline. Craig, 32, had his children as mascots as he skippered the side in Saturday’s 2-2 FA Cup draw against Rochdale and is understood to have interest from a number of League One clubs.

Toffolo has featured 16 times on loan at Doncaster this season and also had spells with Swindon Town, Scunthorpe United, Pe- terborough United and Rotherham United.

Harris said: “Harry has got fantastic pedi- gree. He’s had a great football upbringing at Norwich in the last few years and has got ex- cellent experience for a 22-year-old with 80 games in League One.

“We heard Harry might be going back out on loan and wanted to jump in. It gives him the chance to prove himself in the Champi- onship at a young age. He should be playing at this level.

“It gives him a chance to look at us – our training methods, working with the lads and our dressing room environment. It is also added competition for places in the backline.

“When I talk about the club it is not just

tactically on the pitch but also off the pitch. These short-term deals give players the op- portunity to settle in the area. I like players being local. It’s about the whole dynamic.

“Jason Shackell is 34 and Harry is 22 but it is the same scenario. There is certainly one eye on the future with them, for sure.

“We have been light on personnel over the course of the last six weeks in particular and Harry gives us a really good option at left- back. He is attack-minded and that opens up him playing on the left of midfield too.”

Millwall were still in talks with Tim Cahill over a return to The Den as our paper went to press yesterday.

Harris confirmed on Saturday that negoti- ations had taken place with the 38-year-old Australian international, who flew into the UK at the weekend.

Cahill is a free agent after leaving Mel- bourne City in early December.
