Manchester United defender is going from strength to strength at Crystal Palace
By Conor O’Sullivan
Timothy Fosu-Mensah is enjoying life at Crystal Palace after nailing down a staring place at right-back with the on-loan Manchester United player producing another impressive display in the Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Burnley.
He said: “I didn’t expect us to lose our first seven league games when I joined the club and obviously Frank de Boer signed me but I knew there was quality throughout the squad and they were very difficult opponents whenever I played against them for Manchester United. I came here because I knew I was joining a very good team. Playing regularly has made me stronger and players must have regular game time to develop. I’ve been happy since I joined here, I like the club and I’m improving a lot here and even though I’m scheduled to re-join United at the end of the season my focus is solely on Crystal Palace.
“I’ve spoken to Jose Mourinho a few times during the season and he’s been pleased with my performances so that’s also been encouraging from my perspective but I came to Palace to play so I’m grateful for the opportunity they gave me.”
The 20-year-old offers an attacking threat down the flank as well as defensive solidity while his versatility has been invaluable to manager Roy Hodgson given the team’s injury problems with Joel Ward, Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho all out with injury.
Fosu-Mensah added: “We did well to score first against Burnley and put them under pressure in the first half but it was also important that we managed to defend so well in the second half. Frank de Boer and Roy Hodgson are both very good managers with different playing styles but we’re currently on a good run of form and need to keep it going because the bottom half is very tight.
“Roy had improved our concentration, aggression, energy, shape – every aspect of our game is going well but you must to keep it going because this is such a competitive league. We have a strong squad and still managed to beat Burnley with some big players being injured so we can be proud of ourselves for that.
“I can offer versatility to the team as I can play across the defence and central midfield. I’m happy to play anywhere for Palace, I just want to keep getting minutes.
“We have excellent attackers and at the moment we’re making the most of their talents which is why we’re picking up so many points. I asked Bakary (Sako) ‘why did you miss that chance from my cross?’ but he struck it so well and was unlucky not to find the net.”
