Marcos Alonso targets profitable Christmas period as Chelsea eye top spot in Premier League

N’Golo Kante and Trevoh Chalobah are both in contention for Sunday’s crucial away Premier League match at Wolves.

Both returned to full training this week, Kante had a knee problem while Chalobah rested his hamstring injury.

Romelu Lukaku is gaining more minutes on the pitch following his ankle problem and is expected to start on Sunday at Molineux provided he came through last night’s match against Everton unscathed.

That will mean Kai Havertz drops out of the starting line-up. Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner are also expected to be bench-warmers.

Marcos Alonso, pictured, should retain his left wing-back berth as Ben Chilwell recovers from an ACL injury.

The Spain defender is acutely aware of the number of points on offer in the coming week and will be looking to win in the Black Country to offset the defeat at West Ham two weeks ago.

Chelsea slipped from top to third in the Premier League then, and Alonso wants to reverse that situation as quickly as possible.

He said: “There are so many points in one month and it can change a lot. We were top of the table until recently and that’s where we’re aiming to be at the end of the season.

“We need to come back stronger all together and get back to winning ways. The most important thing is to focus on ourselves, do our job and then look at the table at the end of the season.”

Chelsea Women are at home to West Ham United in the WSL on Sunday. The Blues had a Champions League group match last night before focusing on a derby at Kingsmeadow which they should win comfortably.

But then they should have put Reading to the sword at the weekend, but went down to a shattering 1-0 defeat.

Hayes admitted: “You can’t win every game. I’m disappointed with us. Reading worked their socks off and made it difficult. When you play three in six days, that showed.

“Even though we made changes [at half-time], we weren’t good enough. In the first half, we struggled to deal with the first and second ball phases. In the second half, as they sat deeper, we worked the box but didn’t create enough opportunities.”
