Millwall boss answers when next round of talks with players due to be out of contract will take place

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Millwall manager Gary Rowett is expecting to have talks next month with those players who are due to be free agents this summer.

Matt Smith, pictured left, Shaun Williams, Alex Pearce, Frank Fielding and Shane Ferguson are all approaching just four months left on their Den terms.

“There are so many variables at the end of the season,” said Rowett. “It makes it difficult to sit down with every member of the team.

“When you have got a small group, with injuries, you have got to be mindful how those conversations impact on the group moving forward.

“I try to be fair to the players. Heading towards March is the right time to begin some of those conversations.

“I’m sure that those talks will happen fairly soon.”

Millwall have resolved the futures of a number of their players since the start of 2021 – Danny McNamara, Ryan Leonard, Tom Bradshaw and Murray Wallace have all extended their stays.
