Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo: It was our job to get Jed Wallace out of the s***

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Mahlon Romeo reckoned it was the job of Millwall’s players to get Jed Wallace out of any trouble on Saturday.

Winger Wallace was sent off in the 43rd minute after a late challenge on Kieran Lee.

But the Lions defended superbly to hold on to the lead given them by Matt Smith – repelling Sheffield Wednesday to win 1-0.

Right-back Romeo, who had not seen a replay of the Wallace incident when he spoke to the press, said: “I haven’t seen it back – whether it is or it isn’t we need to get him out of the s***, to be honest. That’s what we did, we came together.

“There will be times in the season when it will be someone else we’ll need to get out [of trouble] – come together as a team and get the job done.

“We knew what was coming [the pressure in the second half].

“To be honest, we were all raring to go at half-time, we were ready for the challenge – we invited it, we were hungry for it. We were hungry to hang on to the lead, and we did.

“This season, for sure, there’s a different feeling around the club – training-wise, camaraderie, it’s a different feeling to how it was last season.

“The work we’ve been doing with Ads [Adam Barrett], breaking off doing our own analysis, everything has clearly been helping. And having Pearcey [Alex Pearce] in there as a voice in and around the changing room has definitely helped. The gaffer made it clear on the first day of pre-season what he wanted and it is coming to life.

“This league is probably one of the best on the planet. If you compare us to others in the league – if you want to look at wages or who has more money – then technically we are underdogs. But it’s not a problem for us and it’s not something that affects us. If anything we thrive off it.”

Millwall head to Fulham on Wednesday night – the west London club have won the last three fixtures.

Romeo is set to face winger Ivan Cavaleiro, who produced a spectacular winner at Huddersfield on Friday night. The on-loan Wolves man could also switch to Anthony Knockaert, snapped up from Brighton for the season.

“They are names that a lot of people will know,” said Romeo. “It’s another challenge, it’s going to be a different mindset. We’ve just got to go there and get the job done.”
