Millwall set to appoint former Chelsea and current England U20 boss Joe Edwards as their new head coach

Millwall are set to confirm Joe Edwards as their new head coach.

The 37-year-old came through Chelsea’s coaching academy and then worked with the likes of Jose Mourinho, Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.

Edwards is expected to be confirmed in the post either Monday or Tuesday and will be in charge for next weekend’s Championship match at Sheffield Wednesday.

Edwards was on the Blues’ books as youngster before being released at the age of 16.

He took up his first coaching role with them when he was 19.

Edwards had success with both Chelsea’s U18 and development teams and then was promoted to assistant coach when Lampard was appointed boss in 2019.

He was in charge of their U18s when they twice won the FA Youth Cup. His U19 team were runners up in the UEFA Youth League in successive seasons.

Edwards helped develop Reece James, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham while he was at the Stamford Bridge outfit.

After Lampard was sacked, he remained in his role under Tuchel as Chelsea won the Champions League.

Edwards was appointed assistant manager to Lampard at Everton in January 2022 – ending 27 years with the west Londoners.

Former Luton Town, Stoke and Southampton boss Nathan Jones had also been under consideration along with Michael Beale, who is out of work since his dismissal by Rangers.
