New university set to open in Croydon

By Tara O’Connor, Local Democracy Reporter

Students who received their A-level results yesterday will be getting ready to start their courses at Croydon’s new university.

This September, London South Bank University (LSBU) will open the doors of its new Croydon campus.

Teaching is set to start on September 20 in five courses; adult nursing, mental health nursing, chiropractic, business management and accounting and finance.

In the first year there are 350 places across the subjects.

The university will be based at Electric House, an office building that has been empty since 2013.

The conversion of the Art Deco building was given the go-ahead by Croydon council last year and the four-storey building in Wellesley Road will be home to a lecture theatre, classrooms and a café.

Deborah Johnston, LSBU vice chancellor, said: “Our new LSBU Croydon university campus will train the next generation of nurses and business leaders when it opens in September 2021.

“LSBU Croydon will have state-of-the-art labs that replicate real-life wards to give students the skills they need to provide first-class care to patients and will help the NHS to tackle the severe shortage of nurses across London and the South East.”

She added that the new campus will also offer training to local residents and companies at a new business centre.
